If you don’t get around to Downtown Houston too often, this is the perfect time to go check out what’s going on! In the heart of downtown, you’ll find Discovery Green and a calendar bursting with things to do.
What is Discovery Green? A better question might be, what ISN’T Discovery Green? This huge downtown park has it all. No, literally! Just a few of the features of Discovery Green are:
Kinder Lake, where you can kayak in the summer and ice skate in the winter
Hagstette Family Putting Green
Sarofim Picnic Lawn, with the infamous Mistree water feature
John P. McGovern Playground, a new play space with 31 trees for extra shade
Two permanent restaurant options, The Lake House and The Grove
Gateway Fountain, where kids and adults alike can frolic in jets of water shooting up from the ground
Anheuser Busch Stage, a state of the art performance space
Okay, I think we’ve made our point! But, what SPECIFICALLY can you do in the park? Here are some of our favorite activities at Discovery Green this winter:
Winter in-Person: Fitness at the Park - Enjoy an entire series of free fitness classes in the park. You can join core-focused yoga on Tuesdays at 6:30pm until January 25th, or hatha yoga on Saturdays at 9:00am. Flow straight into Tai Chi after hatha, or get your heart rate up on Wednesdays at a 6:30pm HIIT class.
Check out their full list of classes HERE and let us know in the comments which ones you try out!
Clutch City Wednesdays - If you haven’t gone rollerskating in a while, what are you waiting for?! Every Wednesday from 5:00-10:00pm, roll along to Houston musicians in the park, and don't forget to wear any Houston sports team gear to receive $2 off admission.
Green Mountain Energy Ice - If you’d rather ice skate than rollerskate, don’t miss the seasonal skate rink. The rink is open daily, but hours and availability vary. Be sure to check out all the details HERE, as you need to reserve your tickets in advance and make sure you know all the rules and regulations for the rink. Enjoy!
A Christmas Story: Bank of America’s Screen on the Green - Grab your blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy this Christmas classic in the park. The event is free but is subject to cancelation depending on weather, so keep an eye out on the website for updates. There is a new movie starting at 7:00pm every Thursday, but A Christmas Story is playing this Thursday, December 9th.
